Wood and Metal

  • Instrumentation: Bassoon and Baritone Saxophone

Program Note

Written for Lorelei Dowling, this piece is inspired by the understanding of contemporary music gain through my experiences in Germany. Relatively new to writing for soloistic Bassoon, I focused on the instrument's lyric qualities.  Juxtaposed is an exploration of the Bari Sax's unique colors, especially an alternation of "open" and "closed" tones on either side of its octave break.  Further movements (in development) delve into multiphonics and a chorale comprised of simultaneously played and sung (or "growled") tones.
