Program Note

This multi-movement work was written between March and April 2012 in Hyde Park, Massachusetts and Center Sandwich, New Hampshire.  Dedicated to the Central United Methodist Church of Detriot, Michigan, it was commissioned by CUMC's Director of Music, Dr. Edward Maki-Schramm through the NEW CHORAL MUSIC! initiative, a Kickstarter project that funded my 2011 CD, Motets.

The piece sets five adapted verses of the hymn, "The Church's One Foundation," written by Samuel John Stone (1839 - 1900), paired with the familiar tune "Aurelia," written by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810 - 1876).  The first four verses are set as their own movements.  The fifth verse is stated in a chorale setting, and the work is concluded with a fugal Alleluia.
